'Dances And Perpetual Songs' was recorded at home in early 2021 using mainly homemade musical instruments. go went gong! is the project that gave me the opportunity to stand back and reflect on my experiences from recent years and realise how every day life can be part of the music making process. Parenthood, place, working as a community musician, gardening, and listening to music all feel as important as the actual act of music making.
In September 2020, I started making my own stringed instruments out of scrap wood, which soon became a central part of my music.
This album consists of two types of semi-improvised compositions: "Dances' are rhythmic exercises where the main instrument is a hammered 22-string electric lap harp and 'Perpetual Songs' are longer compositions in which unsynchronised musical events overlap to create ever-changing patterns that if not stopped could go on forever.
All proceeds from digital download of the album will go to PIANODROME, a 100-seater amphitheatre in Edinburgh constructed entirely from upcycled pianos (this album would not have been possible without Pianodrome's generous donation of piano tuning pins) and CRAIGENTINNY COMMUNITY GARDEN, a growing project in North East Edinburgh which has been a great source of inspiration in the past year.
